The Annual ACCA Sustainability Reporting awards hosted by the global body for professional accountants organisation, ACCA, rewards companies which demonstrate their commitment towards environmental, social and sustainability reporting. At the 2011 award function held on 14th Feb 2012, John Keells Holdings was honoured for being the most transparent and accountable business entity in the Sri Lankan corporate sector, in the large scale category.
Another DNV Business Assurance customer, Diesel & Motor Engineering Company (DIMO), won the runners-up ACCA Sustainability award in the large scale sector. Speaking about the awards secured by two of our customers, a happy Santhosh Jayaram, Head of Sustainability and Business Excellence Services (South Asia), who was also present at the award function, says, “It was a proud moment as the award announcements were being made. It gives us immense satisfaction to have two of our customers based in Sri Lanka win the prestigious ACCA Sustainability award."
The 2011 ACCA awards attracted considerable interest from the business community in Sri Lanka. Many businesses from different sectors joined the ever growing sustainability reporting family and put their activities and initiatives to the test against the ACCA's assessment criteria.
"The objective of the awards is to benchmark Sri Lanka’s business houses, both in the large and SME segments against global reporting guidelines, encouraging them to act more accountably and with greater transparency,” says Santhosh, adding, “More and more organizations today are increasingly becoming conscious of Sustainability reporting…realising the positive impact it has on society, the economy, and a sustainable future."
What winners had to say
“The John Keells Group continuously strives to maintain and ensure the perfect balance between good business sense and being a transparent and accountable organisation. The Group does so by adhering to its sound Sustainability Policy, and also through our integration of Sustainable practices and awareness throughout our business processes. The ability to handle external impediments and minimize potential risks too is a by-product of the Group’s long term Sustainability strategies. Monitoring performance against internal targets as well as global Sustainability benchmarks and norms, reporting periodically as per the GRI-G3.1 framework and reviewing our policies, practices and targets through the feedback received via regular and on-going stakeholder engagements, the Group continues to ensure its long-term progress in this dynamic business environment. Winning the Gold Award for the John Keells Holdings PLC Sustainability Report 2010/11 at the ACCA Sustainability Reporting Awards 2011 is a further reiteration of the Group’s commitment to Sustainability.”
- Suresh Rajendra, President, John Keells Group
“DIMO operates on the basic premise that our destiny is in the hands of our stakeholders, be it customers, principals, shareholders, employees, members of the society and other stakeholders. Our sustenance depends on how well we meet their expectations. In our very first Integrated Annual Report, we have made an effort to seamlessly integrate financial and non- financial information on stakeholder related performance and environment preservation. Members of the DIMO tribe are extremely happy about the recognition received at the ACCA Sustainability Reporting Awards – 2012, recognizing transparency in Sustainability Reporting. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the role played by DNV over the years, in our journey towards achieving excellence in this sphere.”
