What is the RSB certification system?
The Roundtable of Sustainable Biofuels (RSB) certification system applies to all operators and products in the biomass and biofuels industry. Certification is conducted through third party certification bodies, such as DNV Business Assurance.
RSB is a global, recognised standard, developed through a multi-stakeholder process. It is a voluntary standard that proves that your product is responsibly produced, and meets certain demands. The RSB certification system is recognised by the European Commission (EC). Certified products and operators comply with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), and are thereby given access to this market as sustainable biofuels/biomass.
RSB certification requires a proven 50 % cut in GHG emissions for a blend of biofuels, compared to fossil fuels. Operators are required to meet any applicable regulatory GHG requirements in the region where they operate. Additionally, certification requires compliance with 12 principles and criteria. The audit will address the following topics:
- Legality
- Impact assessment and stakeholder consultation
- Planning, monitoring and continuous improvement
- Greenhouse gas emissions
- Human and Labour Rights
- Local Development & Food Security
- Conservation (Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services)
- Soil, Water and Air protection
- Use of technology, inputs and management of wastes
- Land Rights
Why certify to the RSB certification system?
Renewable energy is of global interest, and is significant in the efforts to reduce GHG emissions globally, to reduce and reverse global warming. Regulatory requirements and players in the market increasingly demand that providers prove responsible and sustainable production of biomass and biofuels, throughout the supply chain.
Benefits of RSB system certification:
- Assurance to your customers that your products are responsibly produced and represent GHG emission reduction compared to fossil fuels
- Market recognition as a leading player in the market for sustainable biofuels
- Proves compliance to your region’s regulatory requirements
- Proves compliance with the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), thereby granting access to this market for your biomass/biofuels products
- Certification enables you to communicate credibly to the market regarding the sustainability of your biomass/biofuels products
